Concert Series Program #3 Virtuosos Españoles: Spanish Masterworks of the 18th Century with Jude Ziliak (violin) & James Kennerley (harpsichord) Monday, May 24, 2021, 6PM (EST) Join us live! Sonnambula's Jude Ziliak and James Kennerley present an enchanting pre-recorded concert of baroque music from the eighteenth century, featuring rarely-heard gems by José Herrando, Juan Oliver y Astorga, Domenico Scarlatti, and Marianna Martinez. Audiences will be treated to Herrando's vivid sonic depiction of the celebrated Garden of Aranjuez in springtime — and the North American premiere of an as-yet unrecorded virtuosic sonata by Oliver y Astorga (1676). There will be a live Q&A with the artists after the concert. |

Learn from the musicians about some of the most spectacular moments in the work, from its joyful and eclectic expressiveness to its deeply Spanish style. Listen in as they describe the intriguing complications of learning a virtually unknown opera and as they discuss the process of selecting scenes for our online performance this June. Stage Director Monday, February 22, 2021, 5PM (EST) The Hispanic Society’s 2020-2021 Concert Series is devoted to the production of the North American premiere of the opera, Apolo y Dafne (ca. 1696–99), in collaboration with Sonnambula. Apolo y Dafne is a dramatic opera, or zarzuela, by Spanish baroque composers Sebastián Durón (1660–1716) and Juan de Navas (ca. 1650–1719), with an all-female cast, unique for its time. Join us for a series of programs devoted to this work, beginning this evening with a special livestream conversation with Baroque opera veteran, Guillaume Bernardi (Oper Frankfurt) and Elizabeth Weinfield (Sonnambula). Learn about the complicated and fascinating process of mounting an opera production, particularly during our own uncertain times. What is the stage director's role in the process of depicting a dramatic work, and how is this complicated in a streamed production? Learn about the process of making an opera from a deeply historical perspective, with a behind-the-scenes look at our project in its most nascent stages. |
